The District of Pupusas — Film Screening and Filmmaker Q&A
A screening of the short documentary “District of Pupusas” (2026), followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Alexandra Colón-Amil. Through the stories of Salvadoran food entrepreneurs, the film explores how Salvadoran immigrants have shaped Washington, D.C., through food, culture, and community. Sponsored by UMD’s School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, Spanish and Portuguese, and U.S. Latina/o Studies. Free.
Marta Pérez García: Bearing Witness (Weekdays through Oct. 15)
University of Maryland's Latin American and Caribbean Studies Center presents an exhibition by Marta Pérez García in the H.J. Patterson Hall atrium. Her handmade-paper sculptures explore survival, gender-based violence and self-empowerment, with particular attention to Puerto Rico. Craft and Create: Stories Our Hands Remember
This workshop, presented by artist AnaYelsi Velasco Sanchez, explores murals as a form of storytelling and resistance in Latin America and Latine communities in the United States, highlighting how mural-making is used to reflect histories, traditions, relationships, and lived experiences. Participants will explore memory, identity, culture, and belonging through collaborative art-making. Using traced hands as a canvas, participants will create symbolic artworks reflecting the people, traditions, struggles, joys, and stories that have shaped them. Together, these individual pieces will become a collective mural celebrating the many stories we carry. No art experience necessary.
