Unearthing Foundations examines how our personal and cultural past influences what comes next, even if we can’t see it. The artists featured in this exhibition explore how place, family, rituals, and nature are layers in a timeline, and ask us to reflect on what we hold on to or discard. Curated by Rebecca Perez.

The documentary film Las Muertes Más Bellas del Mundo tells a story of the Salvadoran community in Washington, D.C., sharing their struggles and humanity through the eyes of artists of the diaspora who made enduring art out of the horrors of war. The film is in English with Spanish subtitles.

To honor Hispanic Heritage Month, selections include “Cuban Overture” by American composer George Gershwin, “Symphonic Dances” from West Side Story by American composer Leonard Bernstein, “Paconchita Latin Overture for Symphony Orchestra” by Spanish composer Óscar Navarro, “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5” by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, “Si Tú Me Faltaras” by Cuban composer Luis Hernández Alfonso, “Four Dances for Orchestra” from Estancia by Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera, and “Conga Del Fuego Nuevo” by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez. Corn Husk Flowers with the Artesanas
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Creative Alliance's CIELO Artesanas! Join us for a hands-on workshop where a CIELO artesana will teach you the traditional Mexican art of making corn husk flowers, known as Flor de Totomoxtle in Nahuatl. Corn has held deep spiritual and cultural significance in Mexico and Central America since the time of the Maya and Aztec civilizations, who depended on it for survival and revered it as a sacred gift from the gods. This reverence also meant not letting any part of the corn plant go to waste. Corn husk flowers grew out of this respect and became an artistic tradition that is still used today for altars, weddings, and Day of the Dead celebrations. These flowers are a beautiful example of how to turn everyday materials into works of art.

Voices of Clay
Take an immersive, multisensory journey into the world of ancient sound through live demonstrations of instruments from the pre-Columbian Americas. These performance-based demonstrations give an inspiring introduction to ancient instruments whose unique forms, scales and sounds provide a glimpse into the extraordinary cultures that created them. Learn about and experience the evocative sounds of little-known ceramic instruments like whistling bottles, polyphonic flutes, trumpets, whistles and rattles. Participants get to make music themselves with hand-built ceramic ocarinas.
2026 Bailando con las Estrellas (Dancing with the Stars)
Bailando con las Estrellas brings local celebrities to the stage for an evening of dance and community celebration benefiting the Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center. Funds raised through the event support ChesMRC’s work helping people from different cultures become successful and engaged members of the community.
